MINI CHALLENGE UK at BTCC Oulton Park – Inside the Weekend with NAPA Racing

Oulton Park always delivers a strong BTCC weekend, and this year was no different. The circuit has a way of putting everything on show — close racing, constant pressure, and very little room for error — and the support categories once again played a major role in the overall event atmosphere.

The MINI CHALLENGE UK races were right in that mix, producing the sort of hard, elbows-out racing the series is known for. Oulton Park rewards commitment and punishes even the smallest mistakes, which kept the pack tightly bunched and the racing intense from start to finish.

For us, the weekend came with the added opportunity of being guests of NAPA Racing, courtesy of Joe Tanner. Having that access across the weekend changed the perspective completely, with pit lane access and time spent inside the BTCC paddock offering a closer view of how everything operates behind the scenes.

Being in and around the garages gave a real sense of how much happens away from the cameras. Watching the preparation and constant fine-tuning around drivers such as Ash Sutton and Dan Cammish highlighted just how detailed and fast-moving the environment is once the cars are in operation.

The rhythm of a BTCC weekend is relentless — cars rolling out, coming back in, adjustments being made, and teams working to tight windows between sessions. Seeing it up close in the pit lane and garage areas gives a much clearer appreciation of just how much effort sits behind what the crowd sees on track.

In the MINI CHALLENGE UK, Joe Tanner delivered a strong and competitive weekend. Race 1 saw him bring the car home in P2, backing that up with a P3 finish in Race 2. Both results came in a highly competitive field where track position is hard-earned and even small margins can make a big difference.

Those results reflected a solid weekend of execution in a series where consistency and racecraft are everything. Oulton Park’s layout means overtaking is never straightforward, so maintaining position and capitalising when opportunities appear is key — and Joe made the most of those chances across the first two races.

Overall, the weekend had everything you expect from a BTCC round at Oulton Park: close racing, packed grandstands, and a paddock environment that never really slows down. The MINI CHALLENGE UK added to that with competitive, tightly fought races, and the NAPA Racing experience provided a rare look at what goes on behind the scenes at this level.

A big thank you goes to Joe Tanner and NAPA Racing for the hospitality and access throughout the weekend. Being able to experience the event from inside the paddock and pit lane adds a different layer to watching race weekend unfold, and it’s something that stays with you long after the final chequered flag.
